We’re well into the summer, but still have a few more weeks to enjoy the sunny weather, days on the boat and smell of grills heating up for dinner. Although the events of summer can seem fun and exciting, there are a few safety precautions to be aware of – especially when it comes to grilling.

On average each year, about 9,000 home fires are caused by a grill and almost half of all injuries from grills are burns to the skin. Although grilling occurs year-round, peak times for utilizing the grill are during the summer months. Below are a few tips to stay safe while grilling, especially during the summer months:

-          Make sure your grill is on a flat surface away from the exterior of your home. If your grill is right up against your siding, it can create damage to the side of your house and – in extreme cases – can ignite. Additionally, do not keep your grill indoors or in a garage. They produce CO2 fumes which are fatal in areas that do not get proper ventilation.

-          Keep children and pets away from the grill, especially if playing in the backyard or roughhousing. A stray soccer ball or game of fetch can turn south if done so around a hot, ignited grill.

-          Wear protection if you’re the chef. A heavy apron and oven mitts are suggested to protect your skin in case of sparks and the unfortunate event of heavy flames.

-          Keep a fire extinguisher close by whenever the grill is in use…for obvious reasons.

Be sure you take these tips into consideration when planning your next grilling session. Whether it’s just you and your spouse or a houseful of guests, taking the proper safety precautions can prevent traumatic damage to you and your home.
